Wedding Wednesday: Mom's Wedding Dress & China.

A few weeks ago, while Cameron and I were at my parents' house, I decided it would be fun to try on my mom's wedding dress! I was also nervous that it wouldn't come past my thighs because of how tiny she was when she got married (Mom - you're still tiny, but you know what I'm saying..).  Well, I got it on, but it's definitely not zipped in the back. :)

While I don't plan on using her dress in my wedding day, I do plan on using part of her lace veil. Maybe wrapped around my bouquet?

And then on Monday, while I'm reading through the usual blogs, I see that Megan tried on her mom's dress, too, and was surprised at how similar they looked! Go to her post to see!

Before we got engaged, Cameron and I went over to his grandmother's (Rara) house to help her move some furniture. When we were done, she took us over to her china cabinet saying that she wanting to show us something. There was a stack of the most beautiful gold & ivory china. She reached inside one of the cups and took out a small piece of paper. On it read, "Cameron wants this"  and the date that she wrote the note -- he was like 10! I got butterflies in my stomach thinking that maybe one day, we'd be owning that beautiful china as a married couple! My man has great taste! :)

Then, the evening of Cameron's birthday, we went over to his parent's house for dinner. When his mom brought dessert out, guess what the peach cobbler was served on!!
Isn't it gorgeous?!? This china is atleast 100 years old and I am honored that the next family it will be in is ours! Rara didn't have any of the large dinner size plates so we'll have to find and register for some of those that will look good paired with these. Suggestions?

Did you incorporate your mother's wedding dress or veil in your wedding? If so, how?
What china pattern did you register for?

  1. Try this! :) http://www.herendusa.com/DINNERWARE/Dinnerware+Patterns/Golden+Laurel.

As for the veil, see if Jen could sew a little clutch for you, then you can pass it down to your daughter (or son's wife :))

  3. I wore my mom's veil. It was lace trimmed and my dress was plain so it worked perfectly!

  4. My jaw dropped when I saw that china pic. Before I even read what you wrote, I knew it was old! Totally freaking jelly you are getting that-it would match my china so well :)http://www.neimanmarcus.com/p/Royal-Crown-Derby-Carlton-Gold-Tableware-Tabletop/prod78700007/

  5. OMG my mom's dress looked a lot like that too! She kept saying I should wear it because she was sure it would come back in style. (Not that I could zip her's up either.)

    That china is beautiful!!!!

  6. I wore my mother's veil too. It was from the 70s so it had a headpiece and a long lace lined train. I took it to a seamstress who removed the headpiece so it was a simple long veil attached to a comb. They also cleaned it for me. It looked gorgeous and meant so much!

  7. Wow, that was definitely the style. My mom's was similar. She took some of her dress and made my garter! Both of my mom's sisters wore her dress after her so she made extra garters for my cousins on their wedding day as well!

  8. Your Mom's dress is so adorable! You could totally have it shortened to knee length and wear it to your rehearsal dinner.

The china is unbelievably beautiful and even more special! Lucky girl :)

  9. So funny to see this because I tried on my mom's wedding dress recently as well :) Hers was too small as well and so itchy because of the lace so I will not be wearing it on my wedding day. And the china is gorgeous!!!

  10. Wow! The dresses do look so similar! So glad you posted a picture of you in it. My parents were married in Nov. 1982. Your parents must have been married near then because that dress was definitely the style! Secondly... how were all of our moms so tiny when they got married!? (someone else told me they couldn't zip up their mom's dress either) My mom's BARELY zipped. I mean, I told her not to zip it out of fear that it would rip, but she did anyway. I literally couldn't breath.

    And that china is gorgeous!!

  11. Gasp...that china is amazing! Good luck finding complimentary pieces...I'm sure with something that beautiful it should be no problem!

My mother refused to let me use any part of her dress or veil, but she did give me the monogrammed handkerchief my 3x great grandmother used in her wedding - that was our family tradition. I was so afraid I would either lose it or the sweat from my hands (I put it in my bouquet) would destroy it. Thankfully its just fine and in the safe now! :)

  13. Check Replacements.com for the china. It is a big store in NC and if they do not have it they should be able to find it.

  14. I love that china - it is absolutely beautiful, and you are so lucky to have inherited it! (Good claim on that, Cameron!)

I used my mother's veil for our ceremony. I had to have it removed from the headpiece it was on, and we just had it sewn on a comb.

  15. Oh Megan that China is so beautiful! And how sweet is it that Cameron said he wanted it when he was 10 years old?! So cute. And I love the idea of using part of your mom's veil to wrap your bouquet. That will be wonderful!

  16. GORGEOUS CHINA!! Also, I am pretty sure every mom has that same dress. So funny how times change. Oddly enough, we will all keep our dresses in hopes that our daughters will wear them one day too.

  23. I wore my mother's veil. I loved it. Her dress was lost in a flood, but since my mom was also tiny, I don't think that it would have mattered! I love that china.

  24. So...I deleted my comment with all the links... and how about just one link: http://www.charlestongirlblog.com/2012/07/my-mothers-wedding-dress.html You inspired me to write a post about my mom's dress. :) And it looks somewhat like your mom's too. The long poofy sleeves were in back then I guess. :)

  27. I'll be blogging about our china that we registered for soon over at Here Comes The Belle! Check it out at www.herecomesthebelle.blogspot.com

You look beautiful in that dress too! I was going to try to incorporate my mother's dress for my wedding day, but she threw it away years ago without ever thinking of it. So instead, I'm having a heart sewn into my dress with one of my dad's shirts for my something blue!
