Guest Bathroom: Before & After + Advice From You!

When Cameron first bought our house, let's just say, it was outdated. Yeah, that's the nice word for it, outdated.

Today I'm going to show y'all before and after pictures of the guest bathroom and then ask for some design advice. :)

So here it is how we found it..
Ah yes, the sun moon and star border and wallpaper.
Side note - I used to LOVE the Sun, Moon, and Star perfume back in the day. :)
PS - Did you notice that the cheap-o's took the light bulbs?!? They started taking those AND the outlet covers before we noticed and had to put a stop to it. Moving on...

The contractor re-did the bathtub, including removing the random tiled wall, and installed subway tile. We stripped the wallpaper and painted the walls.

My first dilemma was what the heck should I do with the cabinets? Painting them white was the obvious choice. Luckily, my friend, Jenny, spoke up and suggested black. I was really nervous about it, but I went for it. And I'm SO glad I did!

Here's where you come in, friends.
You see that HUMONGOUS mirror and those AWFUL bulb lights? Scroll back up and look, I'll wait.
Now what the heck do I do with that??
All thoughts and suggestions welcome!

  1. new light fixture is easy fix. ( wait for Quoizel warehouse sale). you can frame the mirror using moulding and mirror adhesive like I did in the upstair bath. Also look at the "built-in " shelving on my Pinterest board that I want in my master bath. Since you only have one sink and such a long counter top. you could do one shelf thing on each end. you could also do a series of hooks to hang towels on instead of a rack since you have a long wall to work with. Can't wait to hear everyone else's ideas.

  2. We have a big, long mirror in our guest bath and my inlaws framed it. It looks amazing! You can find lots of DIY instructions on Pinterest. Not sure what to tell you about the lights, though....

  4. You could hang some fun pendant lights maybe? And I agree with tying to frame the mirror... Either that or get a smaller framed mirror (since there's only one sink anyway) and then put some artwork or framed pictures on either side of it.

  5. I love that color you chose! I am trying to decide between a similar sea foam green color and a blue tone. It's hard because you have to live with it!

  6. Look at how much you've accomplished! Know that wasn't fun, but the improvements have to be so worth it. I agree with the idea of framing the mirror. You could do a black frame, which would tie in the black cabinets. Or, you could find a really great, unique mirror to hang in its place. If it's taller, rather than wider, you could put two beautiful sconces on either side and just remove the vanity lights all together.

  7. I agree with framing the mirror. I don't really have a recommendation for lights though.

  8. Oh my gosh it looks a gazillion times better. One day I need to do this before and after with our bathrooms. They are atrocious. I'm anxious to hear all of the advice you get because I have no clue where to start!

  10. I already think you have done a great job :) (except I would have kept the moon/stars) hehe. I think if you took the large mirror down and replaced with two individuals along with individual pendant light fixtures. Cannot wait to see what you decide!

  11. Wow, what a huge difference! I love the colors you've chosen so far and the black cabinets look great. I don't think I would've thought to go with black, but it was definitely a good choice.

  12. I am still puzzled as to why you got rid of the sun and moon paper??

  13. It looks great! I love the black cabinets. And build a frame for that mirror! There are lots of diy tutorials. And maybe invest in a new light fixture?

  14. Love it! Such a huge difference. You could add wall sconces on either side of the mirror. Definitely get either two smaller mirrors or frame that bigger one. Just some ideas.

  15. Wow, what a great transformation! I love the colors you chose. Looks much more cheery. As for the mirror I would frame it. Pinterest has some easy tutorials- it would give it a little something! Personally I like the big hollywood bulb lights. I have them in my bathroom and it gives so much good light!

  16. Such a major improvement! If the sink is in the center of the counter, I would take down the big mirror and hang a smaller one over the sink and replace the lighting fixture.

  17. Frame the mirror to match the cabinet color. There's a great tutorial Katie Krysh just did on her blog Keep Calm and Carry On. She had a smaller version of the same mirror and it made a major improvement! It looks great though :)

  18. Love what you have done so far! When we built our house they had the option to 'frame' the bathroom mirrors and I'm so glad we did. It's really expensive looking in a bathroom! I'm wondering if you got thinner width crown molding, stained it and then framed your mirror? Then maybe add a simpler light fixture on the top?

  19. There are SEVERAL DIYs on pinterest on how to add molding to your mirror to make it look a lot nicer. They even made a little shelf. This should link to it

  20. if you want to get really creative, since you have such a huge counter space you could install double sinks and have the mirror cut in two and have them framed out for each sink, but I'm sure that more than you're planning to do now. I'm agreeing with everyone else, add molding to frame it!

  21. Ok the previous owners took the bulbs AND the outlet covers? That's ridiculous! I vote take the mirror off the wall and go for a new one, or frame the current one. I've seen some great tutorials on pinterest!

  22. Oh my who thinks to take those. I would get it framed out. And a new light fixture should be pretty easy fixes.

  23. What a huge difference! It looks amazing - I especially love the cabinets and valence. Can't believe the former owners took the light bulbs - how tacky!

  24. Oooooh girl, I hate to cost you money, but I second the GREAT idea above of changing it into a dual vanity. I know it's a guest bath and not a master, but two sinks would look incredible there. Have you seen the idea on Pinterest of the framed long mirror over the dual sinks with the built-in shelving inbetween them? It already looks so awesome. Nicely done!

  25. Love it! So cute. Subtle changes really do make a world of difference sometimes.

  26. I don't know if you follow younghouselove.com but is a great blog with awesome diy ideas and they have a bathroom super similar! They might give you some inspiration!

  27. It's a very fresh look for your bathroom! It's simpler but it has a lot more character. Although you just made only a few changes, it was still a huge improvement on the overall look and ambiance of the bathroom. The light colors that you chose simply complemented with everything pretty well!
